MESA, Ariz., April 20, 2001 — Aechelon Technology, Inc. announced today that it has provided a SW Asia database to the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) for use with Aechelon Technology’s C-NovaTM image generator in the Air Force’s Desert Pivot Training exercise. Desert Pivot 01-3 is being conducted between April 23-27, 2001.
According to Steve Polliard, AFRL coordinator for Desert Pivot, one of AFRL’s missions is to provide four-ship F-16 crew training. Prior to Desert Pivot 01-3, AFRL provided two contractor manned F-16 Multi-Task Trainers (MTTs) as training aids for the command and control crews participating in these exercises. Without the capability to participate with all four of AFRL’s F-16 MTTs, it was not possible for AFRL to provide effective crew training. After Desert Pivot 01-2 (conducted January 7-12, 2001), AFRL formed a working group to resolve the technical problems preventing participation with a four-ship trainer. The major roadblock identified was lack of a high-fidelity Southwest Asia simulation database for its SGI Onyx2® visual systems.
On very short notice, Aechelon Technology was asked to provide the database. In three weeks, from start to finish, Aechelon Technology built and delivered a 5-meter resolution database covering 10 x 10 square degrees, using its C-GenesisTM Database Generation System (DBGS). AFRL integrated and tested the database. “It was flawless,” said Polliard.
The Desert Pivot training exercises are sponsored by Theater Air Command and Control Simulation Facility (TACCSF) located at Kirtland AFB, NM. The purpose of Desert Pivot is to provide recurring distributed Command and Control warfighter training. The primary training objectives include executing Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) responsibilities, Time Critical Targeting, and conducting Search and Rescue missions.
The AFRL Human Effectiveness Directorate, Warfighter Training Research Division (AFRL/HEA) supports these training events by providing four virtual F-16 MTTs to support the training objectives of the command and control participants. Additionally, Desert Pivot offers AFRL/HEA a unique opportunity to further its warfighter training research with C2ISR platforms and systems, and provides F-16 crews with an opportunity to fly its virtual cockpits in a four-ship air-to-air and air-to-ground training environment, where the crews get to interact with real command and control crews.
Aechelon Technology has also delivered the C-Genesis DBGS to AFRL, which will use the C-Genesis system to modify the database to suit its future training requirements.
