03/21/2001 AECHELON TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASES FEATURES OF NVIDIA’S GEFORCE3 GPU WITH “VISIONS OF GAUDI”
Architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1916) was one of the most relevant membersof the Art Nouveau movement in turn of the 20th century in Barcelona, Spain. His work introduced uses of color, texture and shape never seen before his time, together with an extraordinary technical ability.
When the real-time computer graphics team of Aechelon Technology was presented with the opportunity to create demonstration content for nVidia’s new GeForce3(tm) graphics processor (www.nvidia.com), with its revolutionary vertex and pixel shader technology, the opportunity to create a tribute to the genius of Gaudi was too good to pass up.
The screen shots of the demonstration are scenes of a kinetic sculpture museum, with an interior space and a patio scene, connected by a tunnel. This was not an effort to reproduce an existing Gaudi building, but to create a space with lighting, shapes and textures inspired by Gaudi’s style.
The application runs at a sustained 60hz update rate at 1280×1024 32 bit resolutions, and makes abundant use of vertex and pixels shaders, including the multiple texture stages for light maps, reflections, texture and bump mapping. The application was developed using Intrinsic Alchemy with custom extensions in OpenGL(r) (www.intrinsic.com), starting from scratch in about six weeks.
The application will be shown publicly for the first time at the Game Developers Conference 2001 in San Jose, CA March 21-24, at the nVidiaand Intrinsic Graphics booths. Please stop by and check it out!!!
